Exhibition Introduction
David Kramer’s first exhibition in Korea, THE END IS NEAR, will be held at Convensia Gallery in Songdo, Incheon. The artist has garnered international attention for his works that explore the gap between modern ideals and reality through humor and satire. This exhibition presents his unique artistic style, characterized by layered meanings and satire. By combining text and imagery, Kramer offers audiences a fresh perspective as he delves into the intersection of dreams and reality.
The title THE END IS NEAR originates from a phrase featured in one of his sunset-themed works, symbolizing the end of a day. At the same time, it showcases a radiant image that invites viewers to anticipate the start of a new day, imparting a multi-layered meaning. This exhibition is an opportunity to experience the artist’s distinct artistic sensibilities and reflect deeply on modern society through his insightful works.
Artist Introduction
David Kramer (b. 1963, Brooklyn, New York) earned a bachelor’s degree from The George Washington University and a master’s degree in sculpture from Pratt Institute. Early in his career, Kramer’s artistic talent was recognized with grants from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the New York Foundation for the Arts. His body of work reflects the ironic gap between the idealized images from the magazine ads of his youth and the reality of life, which became a defining feature of his artistic vision.
Kramer’s works, often inspired by the style of 1970s magazine ads, use dreamy imagery to highlight optimism with a touch of wit while employing sophisticated text to deliver sharp social critique. Through this unique combination, he exposes the gap between ideals and reality.
His works are included in permanent collections at renowned institutions such as Galerie Steinek in Vienna and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Kramer has also been featured at prominent art fairs, including Art Basel and the Armory Show in New York. In 2020, French luxury brand CELINE introduced a collection inspired by his works, which gained significant attention as they were worn by designer Marc Jacobs and members of BLACKPINK. Kramer is also a close friend of fellow American artist Michael Scoggins, with whom he co-exhibited at FREIGHT+VOLUME Gallery in New York, showcasing their distinct artistic perspectives.
Artwork Description
Kramer’s works combine vibrant colors, symbolic imagery, and sharp text to deliver social and political messages, encouraging viewers to reflect on the complexities and contradictions of modern society. A highlight of this exhibition, The End is Near, depicts a beach sunset, portraying the boundary between endings and beginnings, the finiteness of life, and the value of the present while expressing hope for what lies ahead.
In addition to this iconic work, the exhibition features various pieces in which Kramer inserts critical messages into everyday imagery or the natural world’s beauty. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic experience but also fosters critical thought on social and political contexts.
Kramer also engages with unconventional media, such as hook rugs, where the repetitive physical labor involved in their creation mirrors the sensory aspect of his work. These pieces serve as vital tools for embedding his intended messages while providing tactile and immersive experiences for viewers.
By distorting ordinary, familiar imagery and embedding satirical, multi-layered messages, Kramer offers audiences more than visual pleasure, sparking profound reflections and an enjoyable intellectual engagement.
This exhibition invites audiences to experience Kramer’s unique artistic sensibilities, blending satirical social commentary with profound aesthetic depth, providing a meaningful reflection on contemporary society.
